This month we launched our first of many to come, "Trends Collection". Highlighting on Trends for this Spring season we showcased 3 strong looks. Our dedicated team of Salon educators introduced each look, gave a video demonstration and had a model on site. First starting with a Mens Haircut. Creating sharply faded sides and blending them into a soft textured top. Using Bumble & Bumbles new texture cream this is a great look for any man from hipster to day time professional. Second we used a color concept of soft blonde infused with subtle bold colors. Lastly we took a classic look "the ponytail" and gave it a new face, "The Double Knotted Ponytail". Instead of throwing your hair up in a bun try this great "second day hair" style. Taking your hair into two sections vertically tie into a big knot and then again, pin in place. Keeping it messy and textured is your best bet.

Our collection was derived straight from Spring Fashion. Using the soft texture of florals and bold lines of stripes we have created these looks. Using those same concepts from Spring Fashion each of our looks has the same contrast: soft and bold. Intentionally used together.

As a salon we want to continue to create a unified seasonal expression and we believe this a great avenue to do that. Each season we will produce and introduce the seasons trends, photograph them and have them on display. Come check it out, come be inspired. As stylists at want to be the informer to the client and giving them something they can feel good about, look good with and that's wearable.

To Be or Not to Be a Bang Girl, by Deeda Stylist Taren

I am known as the girl who grows out her bangs once a week. There is a point of length where I change my mind and have to cut them off right away. Maybe it’s impatience, boredom, or maybe just the need to feel like I have the newest, best thing. However, there is something about a girl with long layers, without any fringe, that intrigues me. I admire it in a way. Something I don’t fully understand because I have never lived without them myself. This thought now presents the question…What makes a girl a bang girl vs. a simple non bang girl?

Before I asked some of my clients, I thought about it myself. To be without fringe, you’ve got to have a good sized forehead and freshly shaped brows. To have fringe, it is important to have a good hairline and a texture that is easy to manipulate and style.

After asking some of my girls why they don’t want fringe, most of them said they like to put their hair behind their ears or up in a ponytail. The reason for this varies from personal preference to school, work, and sports. Others said they never go the way they want them to (which tells me they have never had a good stylist to teach them), or that they don’t have the time to style them everyday. One girl even said that having a fringe makes her feel too hot. Most of my bang girls say that they need fringe to cover their imperfections. Whether it’s a big nose, forehead, or wrinkles, a fringe to frame their face softens the exposure while adding character. Other girls, like me, just always like to try something new. Like my best friend says, “keep testing the waters”.

As professionals, we take all of these things into account. Using our clients’ personal preference, lifestyle, skin type, and (most importantly) facial features and head shape to find the perfect style for each person. The best part of what we do is catering to the individual while nudging them in the direction towards looking their best. In this time of taking risks with fashion and our personal styles, no one can say that either way is not “current”. Overall, the decision to be or not to be a bang girl depends on what makes you feel the most confident in your own skin. But at the same time, always listen and trust what your Deeda stylist has to say.

Within the hair styling industry trends and styles are constantly changing. As your stylists it is important for us to keep up with these trends to keep you up to date and looking stylish. One color trend that has become popular this season is balayage also known as “hair painting.” This technique is perfect for anyone who wants to achieve a more “natural” less maintenance look with their hair color. With balayage you can get away with stretching your color appointments out a week or two longer due to the already natural grown out look it gives you, especially in this economy. “Hair painting” has become quite popular among celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Sienna Miller and Nicole Richie. As the sun comes out and the days get warmer clients begin to change their hair color from dark to light for the season, so why not change it up a bit and try this new fun technique to achieve your new look.

Summer Lipsticks

I have discovered my new found love and obsession, lipstick! Red was such a fun and sexy color to play with this past winter but now that we are headed into summer, I'm falling for orange and magenta tones. These colors are so great because everyone can wear them. If you have lighter hair I would try for more of an orange-tangerine and if you have darker hair sport more of a red-orange tone.

With magenta its going to make your lips look really full, vibrant and flirty without having to visit the doctors office for a collagen shot! Your lipstick will be a great cheap accessory to your outfit. Make sure that it suits your skin tone and isn't too overpowering. I always recommend minimizing your eye makeup so that you let your lips be the statement. Some of my favorite brands and colors are MAC Made To Order, MAC Chile, MAC Girl About Town and Nars Funny Face! So maybe if you can't afford those amazing Jimmy Choos retire the summer gloss and flirt with something new and fun, lipstick!

Interview with Angelina for Deeda's Cuts for a Cause benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Q: This is Deeda’s 2nd annual Cuts for a Cause event, what inspired you to host Cuts for a Cause in the first place?

A: To give back to the community. We’ve had so much success in our first few years as a small, local salon and we want to be sure we are using that success for the right things.

Q: Do you feel people are more inclined to participate in a benefit where they receive a service for a cause?

A: It’s a great way to treat yourself, these days getting a haircut is a luxury, but this is a way to get a cut at a reduced price, and a way to pamper yourself at the same. It’s a non-guilty pleasure.

Q: Last year, your efforts were to benefit young girls in Thailand, from prostitution to aiding them in education. How did you jump on board with that project?

A: My friend Rachel was telling me about her efforts of traveling to help these little girls. When she got back she had it in her head to continue her efforts and she inspired me to get involved too. We talked about it and it turned in to Cuts for a Cause.

Q: What was the overall outcome?

A: It was incredibly successful, we raised more than I could have ever imagined. For me personally, it was rewarding to be part of an effort-filled charity. At that time we were just a small salon that had more power than I realized, to help out for a greater cause.

Q: Why the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation this year?

A: I didn’t know what CF was before my nephew was diagnosed and it has been so trying for our family, and now that I have seen him through the first year of his life, I see it’s a cause worth fighting for. Since they do live out-of-state, this is a way I can be a bigger part of his life. The CF community is making tremendous advances in finding a cure and just trying to improve the quality of life for those affected by CF. If we can raise $5000 for Cystic Fibrosis, there could very well be an immediate effect to continue research.

Q: What was the reaction of your stylists when you asked them to donate their services for 8-hours?

A: I have a really gracious team and I am blessed to always have their support, especially when it is for a charity. This is a truly selfless group, so it’s never been a challenge.

Q: What do you anticipate this year? What do you anticipate as far as gaining the community’s efforts in Deeda’s Cuts for a Cause?

A: We plan to make this a year-long crusade, so we are really hoping as many businesses and local media will get involved. We are offering services at a reduced rate for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We are not trying to take other salon’s clients, so overall, I feel this is so beneficial for the community entirely and the fight against CF.

Q: From Hair Wars, to the Grand Opening of Deeda at The Sterling, where do you find the time?

A: Giving back to the community is a huge part of Deeda’s culture, we make it happen. Cystic Fibrosis is a life-long disease and when you look at the bigger picture those are just the stepping stones for the success of Cuts for a Cause.

Living with Cystic Fibrosis - Simon’s Story

Pedro and I had both heard of cystic fibrosis (CF), but knew almost nothing about it before my pregnancy. My OBGYN suggested a couple of genetic tests which I didn't think twice about until we discovered that I was a CF carrier. Pedro was then tested and we found out that he was a carrier as well. Knowing that we were both carriers, the next step was to test the fetus for CF during the amniocentesis. We received the results after about a month of waiting and found out that our son had inherited cystic fibrosis. Pedro and I were both devastated by the news and immediately threw ourselves into researching the disease. After speaking with several doctors and nurses, as well as doing lots of Internet research, we were finally able to fully understand the disease and prepare ourselves for the challenges ahead.

Simon is now 15 months old and doing very well, however his first year was much more difficult than we ever anticipated. He spent his first nine days in neo-natal intensive care, at which time we discovered that he also had some heart defects and a hernia unrelated to CF. At three months he was hospitalized for 28 days with pneumonia, at which time his hernia was repaired and a g-tube (gastronomy tube) was put in. Simon had major issues with vomiting and as a result stopped eating. The g-tube was inserted to feed him- we still do not know if the vomiting was related to his CF or not. Simon was hospitalized for two weeks at a time when he was six and ten months old because of his vomiting. During his last hospital stay the doctors were finally able to minimize his vomiting, although he still throws up a few times a day. Shortly after this last hospital stay we found out that Simon had contracted pseudomonas, a bacterium that shortens the life span of almost every person with CF. Fortunately, Simon did not have to be hospitalized again, but he did have to receive a month of oral and inhaled antibiotics.

By all appearances, Simon is a completely normal toddler. He crawls, is beginning to walk and has a really outgoing personality. He loves people and smiles at and waves to everyone he meets. Every day he receives two 15 minute nebulizer treatments for inhaled medicines and wears a percussion vest for 40 minutes each day to help clear his lungs of mucous. He also has to take enzymes with all of his food to help him absorb fat and fat soluble vitamins, as his pancreas does not produce the necessary enzymes because of his CF. He is still fed through his g-tube and is currently working with an occupational therapist so that he can start eating on his own. Although this is a lot of work for Pedro and I, it has become part of our daily lives and is very manageable. Simon's amazing demeanor and daily antics make it all worthwhile. We do worry about what the future will bring, but just try to focus on and appreciate our time with him right now.

Making The Cut - What Men Like, What Men Want, by Clare

So what it is that makes a man choose a salon over a barbershop? A $30 cut versus a $7.99 cut? In-and-out versus taking a minute to unwind and enjoy? My enquiring mind wanted to know. So, I took to the streets to see exactly why men choose the salon vs. the barber, and what I found was pretty interesting!

The men that choose barbershops only had one answer. It was cheap. On the flip side, the men that come to a salon had a laundry list of reasons. Everything from the fragrant shampoo and scalp massage. To the shears versus clippers, the ice cold beer, and of course, a vibrant and in-the-know stylist that knows a good men's cut. A few men even said their stylist gives them some good old ego boosting! Something that's just not the same if it came from the get-in-and-get-out barber!

I talked to one gentleman the other day, and he said it very simply, "my stylist knows me...I can just sit in her chair and not say a word, she just knows what my lumpy head needs and what will make me look best." Really, it all comes down to preference though. The question is, do you prefer to have it about the quality and the look, or the usual, four on top, two on the side?

Out: Pink marble tile, plastic flowers and an overwhelming gold chandelier.

In: A 6-foot-long set of leather-trimmed bull horns, blue velvet-covered benches, and a pair of late 19th-century Gothic cathedral windows transformed into hanging graffiti-painted art.

The historic Sterling Hotel is undergoing a metamorphosis. From a staid, thick-draped and floral-carpeted inn, the 1894 mansion will soon become an urban getaway with a hair salon on the first floor.

Behind the transformation are two 20-somethings who on Friday unloaded a 17-foot U-Haul filled with treasures from a three-day thrifting trip through Nevada.

"It just needed to be cooler," said Angelina Seva, 29, who plans to open a second location of her Deeda Salon at the hotel. "It was so '80s. We're bringing it back and forward at the same time."

Situated on the southeast corner of 13th and H streets in downtown Sacramento, the Sterling was originally home to the retailing Hale family and its pet monkeys. In 1938, it turned into a boardinghouse with rooms renting for $45 to $70 a month, before becoming an inn in 1988.

That year, the Sterling Hotel opened with new pink and teal overtones, whirlpool bathtubs in every room, fax and copy machines for business guests, and Oriental rugs.

A 10,000-square-foot expansion was added in 1995. Oliver North, Patti LaBelle and Denmark's former prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, were all guests.

D&S Development bought the property in 2008 and took over operations for the 17-room hotel in January.

The developers, who usually turn old buildings into lofts, apartments and retail spaces, knew nothing about running a hotel and continue "learning on the fly," admitted the company's spokesman, Bay Miry.

Whitney Johnson, the designer for the Shady Lady Saloon at 14th and R streets, was named general manager. The plan was to simply operate the hotel, but Johnson couldn't squelch her creative bent.

"I'm not a manager, I'm an interior designer with good people skills," said Johnson, 24. "And it's hard to be in here and not fall in love with it."

Johnson enlisted her friend Seva, and the duo started thinking of a style they dub urban romantic with a sense of humor or modern vintage.

With $7,000 in cash, they took to the highways of Nevada, hitting thrift stores and antique shops in Virginia City, Carson City and Reno.

With the muscle power of two of Seva's brothers, they climbed through a dust-blanketed warehouse to find an old salon chair for $20, lamps for $5 apiece, a classic couch for $150. They saw a vase in an old casino coin counter; a bookcase in a paint-chipped and banged-up pie rack; event signage in a broken easel.

Old hardcover books, like a 1973 guide to home repair for women, a 1988 tome on Persian cats and a 1985 take on beauty, will serve as reading material in the rooms.

The target guests will not be the bed-and-breakfast types who like their danishes served on doilies.

The ideal visitors will be young urban professionals who will note the Old Soul coffee served in the lobby, and the cork bar and windows repurposed as light fixtures in the refurbished restaurant.

"It's probably going to piss a lot of people off," Johnson said. "I'm OK with that."

An idea to have local businesses sponsor rooms in exchange for marketing potential is also being considered, Johnson said.

The final cost of the project is expected to be about a half-million dollars, with the goal of a grand opening in September, Miry said.

"For the most part, we like it," said Miry, as he hauled rolls of carpet, brocaded chairs and Bakelite-accented ice buckets out of the U-Haul. "We trust them. Even though they're young, they've proven themselves."

Barbershop Dream Realized...

I'm jealous. I've been jealous. I've always dreamed of working in a barbershop. Is it because it is mostly boys? Sibling rivalry, perhaps? Every time I drive by the Ace of Fades on Broadway I feel it. I always dreamed of working in a barbershop. Is it because of their master fade? Or is it the sense of brotherhood and community? It just seems so natural, comfortable and fun. To be able to be candid, political and flat out inappropriate at times all the while giving an amazing haircut. There seems to be a real connection, where a haircut is more then a haircut.

I took this dream to heart when designing the space and team at Deeda Salon. I made the stations central so that the energy is open to flow instead of being cornered or separated from the whole. You can choose to stick your nose in a gossip mag or be entertained by your surroundings. I work with a staff that has a sense of humor, style and personality that is easy to relate to. I threw my dream all in a pot, mixed it up, and hoped for my dream to become reality.

Ladies and gentleman, my barbershop dream has been realized. It comes in spurts and is growing in frequency. Let me explain what it feels like...

It was around 7 o'clock, the evening of Cinco de Mayo. My manager Danielle was serving Margarita's and everyone was finishing up. All the front stations were firing! There were a couple of boys waiting around for the girls to finish. My assistant Sara was styling Denise, the hottest G-MA I've ever known with the cutest blond/ short/ shaggy cut. I was styling a long/ blond/curly beauty, channeling her inner Sara Jessica. Next to me was Taren, who was perfecting a straight across bang on one the most delicious head of naturally red hair - I think she was a super hero. Emily caped off the end of the stations with the prettiest punk rock, shaved on the sides but still very fem-do on a girl who came in with a classic bob. As if this wasn't hair heaven enough, the vibe was like ooooooooooh! Clients were talking to other clients who were talking to the boys, who were talking to the stylists and to Danielle and back again. In that moment, I took a snapshot in my my mind forever. Warm, connected, pretty and confident. I was so excited about everything just happening, the feeling, just being. And, viola, my barbershop dream realized!

So, I guess I have not-a-thing to be jealous about anymore, well maybe the 9 by Design people or Gwen Stephanie's hair stylist, but we will get to that another time.

A Deeda Salon dream come true. Thanks again hairdressing gods, I will forever be your humble servant.

Local hair stylist Angelina Seva wasn’t planning on opening her own salon, but that all changed when she stumbled upon a quaint, old-fashioned brick warehouse on 34th Street. Now, a couple of years later, Deeda Salon has revived this once-overlooked section of East Sacramento. Interestingly, Deeda’s building feels like it was designed by Sigmund Freud. There are subtle phallic figures—yes, I wrote phallic—throughout its intricate design, which is something you don’t really notice at first. But then someone points it out and you can’t take your eyes off of them. Anyway, Seva and her team of stylists create bangin’ hair styles, too. Here’s the cut.

What’s hot in hair-styling world these days?

Natural. Shiny and healthy. Bangs are big, too. For a while, people were into disheveled and messy, but now I think, even in fashion in general, structure is coming back.

I think it all relates to the economic climate: People are getting a little more serious. And it also just seems like for a longer time people were trying to be what they weren’t, and that’s kind of what got us into trouble. It’s funny how hair and fashion reflects the mood of a culture.

Art reflects society, right?

Doing hair is like a functional art. It’s cool because business owners always say the three things you never talk about with clients are sex, politics or religion, and that’s all we ever talk about. I think it’s just someone telling me I can’t do it that makes it come out.

But what are we supposed to talk about? The flowers? The personal part is the best part of my job.

What’s the worst?

When colors don’t go right, that’s the worst.

Oops.

It happens to everyone. Coloring hair is like chemistry; it doesn’t always react the same way on everybody’s hair, and sometimes it’s just beyond theory. It’s like art combined with chemistry, but on someone’s head.

Here’s another tricky part: When people are asking for something but they’re describing it weird, you have to do the math. Someone could say an inch, but they mean 2, or someone could say brown, but they mean dark blond. So you have to really be able to read people.

Why’d you choose this location for Deeda?

I found this building and I fell in love with it. I thought it was just this front room, but then I walked into the rest of it and it was so cool. I kind of feel like this place just happened to me. The best part about being in this building is that we can throw these big amazing parties and there are no sound ordinances around here, so we’ve had bands here, people dancing around in the streets.

So what happens at these amazing parties?

Culture. Art. I can’t believe I’ve gotten away with it for as long as I have. We’ve had bands that come up from the Bay Area, like Thank You Julius, and people are just walking around. I think that’s the coolest thing that has come out of this building.

What events are coming up?

We’re going to start a thing called Mommy Mondays, where we invite moms to come get their hair done, but we’ll have activities for their kids here. The economy is bad right now. We know it’s hard to get a baby sitter and get your hair done, so we try to help out with a part of that. I love moms. People sometimes refer to this as a young people’s salon, but we cater to all kinds of people. It’s just about culture and creating a vibe.

And the vibe is …

I would say kick-back and urban, but more on the comfortable side. This building has character and we like to vibe off of it. We feature different local artists, too, like Raul Mejia; he did live art at our last show.

But my staff is a big part of that vibe; the team of girls that I have right now is the best I’ve ever had. They are all really down-to-earth for hair dressers. That’s what I’m most proud of in my staff.

Is that your hiring criteria?

I actually tell them to make me a mix tape, to test them out, because one of the most important things to me is vibe and energy. So I feel like it’s a great way to see if someone is a good fit. Some people get confused, but most people get excited. I think how I end up judging it is “How does it make me feel at the end?” Was I feeling anxious? Was I feeling angry? Was I feeling calm or was I feeling driven? It just depends on what Spice Girl I’m looking for at the time. (Laughs.) Because sometimes I’ll need more flavor or I’ll need someone who’s calmer. It’s been a really accurate way of hiring. … I do feel bad for the people who don’t get hired, though. It’s more personal.
